ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — St. Louis city voters will be asked to raise their property taxes this August to pay for infrastructure improvements and new police and fire equipment.

Aldermanic President Lewis Reed was asked if voters will be willing to raise their property taxes about another $50 per $100,000 assessed valuation.

“I think when they take a look at the entire list, I think voters will find things within that list that will appeal to them,” Reed says.

“I think your upper-middle class and people that are not suffering as bad – and even some poor people – would even vote for it,” added Alderman Frank Williamson.

The $180 million bond issue would require a two-thirds majority to pass.

In addition to money for police and fire equipment, it would include money for city streets and bridges, upkeep of city buildings, and the demolition of abandoned buildings around town.
